FNAF

edit via me

For my project in bcm215, I will be critically analysing and investigating game media text Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF), exploring it through the storyline. By researching the analytical framework using media archaeology, cultural capital, and paratexts, I will be able to construct my DA and contextual report.

There are so many resources on FNAF, mainly created by fans. One important source of information to my research will be Hyper Droid’s full time line on FNAF which explains his theory of the timeline across all the games pulling on ideas from others. Looking at the concepts for my analytical framework, I came across this video: Five Nights at Freddy’s: The Religious Backstory by ohnickel which provided insight to the media archaeology. I believe resources like this will be extremely useful to the framework chosen for my report. There are also a range of academic materials that will assist me with how fans see the games such as this newspaper article which looks at Shelby Watson’s views on the Sister Location game.

My digital artefact will provide a service to my audience through the production of fandom media. It is useful as it produces fan content, allowing other fans to engage with the media text. The audience for my DA includes Five Nights at Freddy’s fans, gamers, bcm215 students and new people to the industry. Based on the feedback from users and levels of interaction I will alter my designs and merchandise choices in order to best engage with my audience.

  1. Hi Taya, really enjoyed reading the concept for your DA. I really enjoy FNAF, the story, gameplay and concept is something I find really interesting and seeing someone else explore this interest as well is really appealing for me.

You will be reaching the correct target audience with your DA concept, making merch, media, designs, or anything FNAF related will definitely draw the attention of the fandom, as the overall fanbase is very interactive with new media/concepts involving the game.

    For example – https://www.redbubble.com/shop/fnaf+fandom

As this is a fanbase that is always looking for new concepts/media, looking at how other fans are approaching this would maybe be a good idea with your digital artifact!

  3. Hi Taya, you mentioned in your video that you’re going to be spending a big part of your time researching into the FNAF series, while doing designs, that is definitely a good idea considering how deep this series goes.

There do seem to be some very important things you have missed when talking about how the model applies to the series so just in case you missed them, I am going to try and point you to somethings I think are extremely important when considering the FNAF franchise.

    1. Game Theory. They get memed around a lot when it comes to this series but their videos are extremely important when it comes to the archaeology and cultural capital of this series. He’s by far the most popular theorist on the storyline of the games so his opinions hold quite a bit of weight and his theory/livestream with a collection of prominent FNAF youtubers had input from the creator Scott Cawthon through website updates during the stream.

    2. Scott Cawthon. You mentioned the religious aspect of these games but that aspect did end up turning into a massive storm in the fanbase. He supported some christian republican candidates in an election who happened to be anti-lgbt+ and him and his family got sent death threats and cancelled forcing him to leave the franchise. This makes any discussion revolving around him or christianity in FNAF very volatile, so is something to definitely do research into to gauge feelings from the audience when doing your DA.

    3. The multiple different stories within the FNAF canon. The FNAF canon involves stories from FNAF 1 – Ultimate Custom Night, FNAF World, FNAF VR – Security Breach, the FNAF novels, the FNAF book series, the FNAF Movie being made. There are plenty of contradicting stories within the series which need to be taken into account when thinking about the ‘FNAF storyline’

Hopefully that helps in your research, hope it goes well!

  4. G’day Taya, this DA concept looks quite cool. FNAF is something that has crossed my path many times, particularly many of Matt Patt’s Game Theory videos, so it’s great to see someone dive into the story and fandom for the first time. So much for you to learn!

In terms of the actual pitch and blog it’s all really well put together. Tags and categories are all in order, which people tend to miss, and the discussion you have within the video is concise. The writing is well done as well, though I do feel that some places are talked over twice in both the blog and video. A small thing that easily remedies in future works. Elsewise no other criticism, all of what I need to understand about your DA is there.

In terms of understanding the fandom I had read this text in a previous research topic I did, likely to be useful to use when researching the fandom and how they contribute to the Five Nights at Freddy’s ID.
