For my project in bcm215, I will be critically analysing and investigating game media text Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF), exploring it through the storyline. By researching the analytical framework using media archaeology, cultural capital, and paratexts, I will be able to construct my DA and contextual report.
There are so many resources on FNAF, mainly created by fans. One important source of information to my research will be Hyper Droid’s full time line on FNAF which explains his theory of the timeline across all the games pulling on ideas from others. Looking at the concepts for my analytical framework, I came across this video: Five Nights at Freddy’s: The Religious Backstory by ohnickel which provided insight to the media archaeology. I believe resources like this will be extremely useful to the framework chosen for my report. There are also a range of academic materials that will assist me with how fans see the games such as this newspaper article which looks at Shelby Watson’s views on the Sister Location game.
My digital artefact will provide a service to my audience through the production of fandom media. It is useful as it produces fan content, allowing other fans to engage with the media text. The audience for my DA includes Five Nights at Freddy’s fans, gamers, bcm215 students and new people to the industry. Based on the feedback from users and levels of interaction I will alter my designs and merchandise choices in order to best engage with my audience.
